Easter Message 2025
“But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 15:57
St. Paul catches the Easter mood so aptly in this letter to the Corinthians. Consider just what the nature of this victory means.
Obvious the Resurrection meant to the disciples that Jesus had triumphed over death. As Easter dawned they were a disconsolate and bewildered group. They had watched their master die on the cross. It marked the destruction of their ideals, all their plans and hopes had been dashed. They faced the reality of Roman rule. But as they made their way to the tomb, the heavy fog of sorrow begins to lift and from the garden comes the almost unbelievable news: THE LORD IS RISEN! Because He lives, His truth shall live and in Him all things shall be made alive.
Paul goes on to say, “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.” Our duty as Christians is to give ourselves to His service as completely as we can, but do we?
There is a story about a cynic who once sought to outwit a sage. He held a tiny bird in his hand, so small that he could conceal it entirely from the sage by his cupped fingers. “What have I in my hand” he asked. The sage replied “a bird.” Then the cynic closed his fingers over the bird and with a sly smile asked, “is it alive or dead?” The plan your see, was to trap the sage by letting the bird fly away if he answered dead, or to crush the bird if the answer was alive. “Dead or alive”, repeated the cynic as the sage hesitated. The wise reply from the sage was, “It is as you will.”
The good news for the days of darkness is HE IS RISEN! We are each called to open our hearts and lives and “abound in the work of the Lord.”
Whether He lives in our lives? “It is as you will.”
May God Bless you this Easter Season with the joy of His Resurrection, in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost!
The Right Reverend Robert M. Hammond
